What is a silent voice interface?

The Silent Speech Interface (SSI) allows people to interact with machines without speaking. Although AI assistants such as Apple's Siri work through voice communication, SSI completes communication through actions related to speech.
SSI technology recognizes speech through the movement of the mouth and tongue rather than sound. To achieve this, SSI relies on various sensors, including vibration sensors placed near the mouth, cameras used to detect people's mouth vibrations, and to track and classify speech related movements. In many cases, this information is processed by machine learning algorithms, which interpret the actions of the mouth and translate them into text.

More private, low-power, and easy to use

Most SSI technologies use facial cameras to collect data from users and those they interact with. In addition to causing privacy issues, wearable cameras also collect high bandwidth video data.
Due to the fact that EchoSpeech does not require a wearable camera, the device only captures audio data, which requires much less bandwidth than image or video data, and can be sent to the phone in real-time through Bluetooth. Privacy information will never escape the control of users, as data is processed locally on smartphones (without being processed in the cloud). Researchers say that pure audio sensors also have higher battery efficiency: audio sensors can work for 10 hours, while cameras can only work for 30 minutes.
