Mainstream chips are all affected, new report points out that attackers adjusting DVFS can steal user data
The cybersecurity team recently released a report stating that there are vulnerabilities in ARM based processors such as Apple, unique display chips from NVIDIA and AMD, and integrated display chips from Intel and Apple Silicon, allowing attackers to steal data through complex means.
DVFS modulates frequency and power in real-time, maintaining acceptable levels of heat dissipation and TDP, providing optimal power efficiency or performance for the task at hand.
The security team received funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the US Air Force to adjust the other two variables by setting a constant value for one of power, heat, and operating frequency, and achieve different command attacks during the adjustment process.
The good news is that this attack method is expensive, technically complex, and requires direct access to the system. Attackers will not launch such attacks against ordinary users.
