Sono, a German technology company, abandoned the production of solar cars and cut 73% of its employees

Due to the failure to raise enough funds, Sono Motors, a German solar technology start-up, has officially announced that it will give up the plan to produce solar cars called Sion and cut most of its employees.

The German start-up said on Friday that it would lay off about 300 employees, accounting for 73% of the total, and shift its focus to selling technology to other companies. Sion is a square hatchback, covered with solar cells, which can be recharged while driving. It was originally scheduled to be put into production this year.

IT Home learned from the official announcement that the company will change its business model to "specially modify and integrate its solar technology on third-party vehicles". Sono Motor Company said that the reason for terminating the Sion project was to focus on the asset-light business model in view of the downturn in the capital market.
Since Sion has 45000 paid reservation orders, the company announced a repayment plan, which will be repaid in various ways in the next two years, including bonuses.
Sono Motor Company said that the success of Sion's 18 vehicle series verification plan proved the feasibility of the concept of solar electric vehicle (SEV). Therefore, it intends to sell the project. Whether this will happen remains to be seen.
Sono is currently cooperating with 23 companies in 10 countries in Europe, Asia and the United States as a development partner and supplier. Customers include Mitsubishi Europe, Chereau, Scania and MAN Truck&Bus.
Sono will now expand its technology scale. First, it will launch its next generation of clean public transport retrofit solution for the mass market - solar bus kit, which is planned to be launched in the second quarter of 2023. The company's solar energy solutions also include power electronic equipment and software and other hardware.
